I am River – Bibs Awards 2017 Inspire Finalist!

Please don’t judge me on my writing abilities from this post, I’m in a state of shock. ‘I am River’ has only gone and reached the finals for the Bibs blogging award! The Bibs! Brilliance in Blogging! That’s so huge and never in a million years did I expect that. I hoped and dreamed of it, but I never once thought I had a shot. It’s unreal!

I started ‘I am River’ 8 months ago when I decided I wanted to be proactive in trying to change society for my son. I needed to feel like I was doing something to make his world a little better, a little easier. I need to be my sons voice in a world that sees him as less.

River was diagnosed with Down syndrome when he was 6 months old, and it hurts my heart to think that he will never be fully accepted, that people will look at him and see his diagnosis before anything else. He has so much to offer this world and so does every other person with Down syndrome, and by showing the world our family’s life I hope I can do a tiny little bit towards changing some perceptions. Down syndrome really is nothing to fear, it’s not as scary as medical professionals portray and to be honest, our life is pretty amazing. River is going to achieve great things for sure!

I never thought I would even get to the finals, and I’m up against some amazing Blogs so I don’t imagine I stand much chance of winning. But I would really love to and I’m going to give it my best shot! To be honest though, even making it to the finals is a massive achievement for us and I am so thankful.

    I am director and founder of Hearrt & Sold, a company set up to help promote the artists of those that happen to have Down’s syndrome. I can truly say that Hayley is part of a collaborative mission to help those with the condition so they may be noticed and celebrated for their unspeakable talent.
